From Portfolio to Public Art

For years, I believed that good work would eventually speak for itself.
It doesn’t.
At least not if nobody sees it.
A while back, I started sending samples of my artwork and design work directly to property developers, business owners, and organizations whose spaces I thought could benefit from large-scale public art. There was no grand strategy. No marketing funnel. No agency behind me.
Just a simple introduction and examples of my work.
Most never responded.
A few did.
One of them was David Lombardi.
David saw something in my work and reached out. What started as a conversation eventually turned into commissioned mural projects in Wynwood, Miami’s world-famous arts district.
This mural is one of those projects.
What I learned from that experience is something every creative professional should remember:
Visibility matters.
Not because self-promotion is more important than talent.
Because talent without visibility is often invisible.
As designers, artists, photographers, writers, and creatives, we spend years refining our craft. Yet many of us hesitate to share our work, introduce ourselves, or reach out to people whose projects align with our skills.
We wait for opportunities to find us.
Meanwhile, opportunities are usually looking for people who are already showing up.
The reality is that nobody can hire work they’ve never seen.
Nobody can commission a mural they don’t know exists.
Nobody can recommend a designer they have never met.
This mural serves as a reminder that sometimes the most important creative act isn’t making the work.
It’s putting the work out into the world.
You never know who’s paying attention.
